Here is Chad waiting in line to get our reservation to eat at the Lady and Sons, Paula Deen's restaurant in Savannah. We ate lunch there on Friday and it was delicious! If only we could eat butter and heavy cream every day! Well, maybe not.
We spent all of Friday morning walking round Savannah reading historical markers and checking out the statues, old homes, parks and other sites. Below is a picture of Forsyth Park.
When we ventured back to the Lady and Sons for lunch, we discovered that Jamie Deen, Paula's son who is sometimes on her show, was there signing cookbooks. So, of course, I had to get one. It actually looks like many of the recipes will be very easy for me to make. And, some of them have less butter and heavy cream than others.
While investigating our trip on the Savannah Visitors web site, I discovered that part of Forrest Gump was filmed there. On Friday afternoon, we drove to Charleston to meet up with friends. We had a great time while we were there. I loved looking at some of the old homes downtown, Chad ate lots of good seafood and we especially enjoyed time with friends. This is us at the South Carolina Aquarium. It was my first trip to an aquarium and was lots of fun. We saw sea turtles and birds and fish and sharks and all that good stuff.
On Sunday, before we left Charleston, we joined Juston and his wife Leslie for a visit to the Magnolia Plantation outside of town. It was a really beautiful property and very interesting to tour. Growing up in Oklahoma, if something was 50 years old, it seemed really old to me. So, seeing family graves with damage from the Civil War and land that has been in a family for 12 generations in our own country, was definitely new to me.
On Monday morning, back in Savannah, we visited Fort Pulaski National Monument. This site marked the first significant use of rifled cannons in combat. A few months ago, Mom and I visited the fort in St. Augustine, Florida, but this was nothing like that one. It was really interesting to learn about. We could even see artillery which was still stuck in the wall of the fort from the Civil War.
We had a great vacation this year! It's fun to explore this part of the country since everything here is so new to us. We've been talking about what to do next, but aren't sure yet. Hopefully, a trip to Disney World will be on the lineup this fall when my sister and Katie visit.

John and I went to Charleston on our honeymoon and visited all those places. I think we even have the same picture (except me and John) in front of the same plantation house!
